Xcaret

Xcaret, formerly Polé, was an important Mayan settlement before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors in the sixteenth century. For the Maya civilization this site was an important port and commercial center where archaeological remains can still be seen.

Researches of the National Institute of Anthropology and History show that the first settlements date back to the Early Classic period (200-600 AD), although most of the buildings were built in the Late Post-Classic (1200-1550 AD). Xcaret was a walled port just as Tulum, but this one, closed maritime access, which means it was susceptible to attacks by sea.
