The city was founded in 1542 by the Franciscan monk Fray Juan de San Miguel, who named the settlement as San Miguel el Grande.
The town featured prominently during the War of Independence of Mexico. The General "Ignacio Allende" native of San Miguel was a key leader in the war against the Spanish domination.
The town of San Miguel el Grande was elevated to City on March 8, 1826 and changed the name to "San Miguel de Allende" in honor of the national hero.
In July 7, 2008 it was inscribed by UNESCO on cultural World Heritage Site.
On November 1, 2013 it was named by the magazine "Condé Nast Traveler" as the best city in the world beside 24 other cities that are known for their great cultural contribution, architectural beauty, and entertainment places.
