San Gervasio

San Gervasio is the largest and most important archaeological site in Cozumel and the only one with an ongoing program of conservation and archaeological research.

Around the year 600 A.D, a rapid growing of the city started, witnessed by the appearance of perishable architecture and better construction quality, and a possible strengthening of its relationships with the coastal sites in northern Quintana.

From the year 1000 A.D, with the emerging of Chichén Itzá as the great political and economic center of the peninsula, the site now called San Gervasio was integrated into an increasingly intense trade and economic network, that helped it to become that great city from 1200 AD until the arrival of the Spaniards.
