San Cristóbal, anciently "Ciudad Real" was founded in 1528 as one of the first Spanish settlements in the Americas. It was the capital of the Province of Las Chiapas since colonial times until the powers, for political reasons, went to Tuxtla Gutierrez, actual capital of the state. Today, it is a cosmopolitan city considered the main tourist area of Chiapas and has all amenities. In 2003, it was included in the "Magic Towns" programme by the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico, considering its architecture and cultural manifestations as a great opportunity for tourism development. In 2010, it was awarded from the President of the Republic, the recognition of the "Singapore Tourism Product Diversification", which was consolidated as the Best Magical Towns of Mexico. In 2011, he won for the second time the same recognition, to highlight its colonial image, entertainment, culture and tradition that provide to its visitors.
