Papantla is considered "Magic Town", whose name means "City of noisy birds" where the sweet taste of vanilla and flying men, are the protagonists. It is the birthplace of "The flying men of Papantla" ritual to invoke the fertility of the earth, considered as Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This city was founded in 1200 by the indigenous Tuzapan, heirs of the Olmecs who dominated the vast region where the Totonac culture flourished, creator of the stunning city El Tajin.
The main crop in the area is vanilla, which locals not only made sweets, but figures and crafts derived from its sheath. We also find textiles besides manufacturing of baskets, sandals, hats and fans in palm, and wood articles such as flutes, small drums with reed and squirrel skin.
