This Magic Town is known as "The City of the three cultures" because in it there are pre-Hispanic ruins, colonial buildings and the contemporary Mexico. Their old houses and in general the whole town are painted in yellow and white, evoking the Vatican flag.
Its main attraction is the Franciscan monastery built on the ruins of a Mayan shrine called "Pap-hol-chak". In the early seventeenth century, the original Franciscan church became the actual convent complex of Our Lady of Izamal.
Izamal was a powerful governing center during the Classic Period founded by Zamná ("Dew of Heaven"), deity considered by Mayas as the god of the universe and creation; he was also a priest, inventor of writing and books; he discovered the sisal and its use, such is the case of the hammocks.
