The city is recognized by both, the local and federal government, as the Cradle of Independence of Mexico, because the atrium of its parish witnessed the "Grito de Dolores", the initial call to take up arms against the regime colonial and Spanish crown issued by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the dawn of September 16th, 1810.

In ancient times the territory was known among native populations as “Cocomacán”, which means "place where doves are hunted."

The construction of the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows began in 1712 and ended in 1778.
