The city is recognized by decree, as "the Cradle of Independence of Mexico" because the court of his parish witnessed The “Grito de Dolores”, the initial call to take up arms against the regime and Spanish colonial crown.
On September 20th, 1710 the construction of the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows begins and with it the current county seat is founded. Parish Building began in 1712 and ended in 1778.
In the morning of September 16th, 1810 the “Grito de Dolores” occurs, called that the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, in company of Ignacio Allende and Juan Aldama, makes to his parishioners to rise against the colonial authority of the New Spain. The call is made with the famous bell Dolores.
