Calakmul Archaeological Sites

Pre-Hispanic Mayan archaeological site in Campeche, located in the region of Petén in Campeche, inside the biosphere over 700,000 ha, a few kilometers from the border with Guatemala.

The site has about 70 square kilometers and more than 6,000 structures; it was the capital of a regional state of approximately 13,000 km ², being together with Tikal, El Mirador and Palenque, one of the major regional powers during the classic period of Mayan culture.

Due to the importance of the site, on July 4th 2002, UNESCO awarded the appointment of Cultural Heritage, extending the distinction to Mixed Heritage of Humanity, on June 21th 2014, recognizing the natural values within the Biosphere Reserve.
